OUR wonderful world

when i was a child, my grandmother used to get my sister and i a national geographic subscription every year and she has continued her tradition now by getting our children yearly subscriptions. geography is one area that i love to learn about, however truly feel that i lack a basic and core knowledge of. i am so pleased that montessori education teaches geography as a core learning area. my boys have been creating beautiful maps of the world since they were in preschool. in efforts to expand geographic learning in schools, at home, and in communities, national geographic is leading a campaign to increase americans knowledge of their world. you can sign up to join the campaign and receive emailed topics and current information. national geographic is a great resource especially in light of the following facts:

74% of young americans think that english is the world's primary language (it is mandarin)

6 in 10 young americans don't speak another language

1/2 of young americans can't find n.y. on a map

19% of young americans have a world map
